Making the Neighborhood Look Better
My project for the Leadership engagement center was to paint the curbs red on the streets around town. I had to really research how much this would cost me if I didn't receive any help from from the city on getting supplies to do this. I also had to make many phone calls in order for me to find out who I would need to talk to to receive permission to do this project. In the end I was directed to the people who take care of all of the streets here in Cedar City. I was then able to receive permission to paint the curbs red on the streets of Cedar City. The City was also able to supply me with all of the supplies that I would need to paint the curbs red. They gave me plenty of paint cans, brushes, rollers, safety cones and safety vests for the work that I was going to do for them.
The City gave me places that they knew about that needed to be repainted desperately. I was also able to obtain a work order from SUU to do some curb painting for them. I then organized different groups of people to help me do all of this work that I had obtained to do. I broke the groups into two groups so that more ground could be covered. I made sure to go over safety pro-cations so that no one would end up getting hurt while doing this work with me. I broke up this work to be done over the following year. All of this work was completed in the fall semester of 2016.

The inspiration for this project came to me while I was walking around campus thinking about what I could do for my EDGE project. I was walking up the hill to the Science Department when I noticed how bad the curbs looked to me. The red paint on the curbs were really faded and was literally non existent on some other spots. I though about how bad that looked and thought that someone should really do something about it. It really made the road look kind of crappy also, how could anyone even tell that they weren't suppose to park there with the red paint nearly gone. Then it came to me, I'm someone why don't I do something about it.

Some of the challenges that I faced while doing this project was that I found out that some of the streets were not owned by the city but, that they were owned by UDOT. This would mean that I would have to get a permit to do the streets that were around campus. In the end I was never able to obtain the permit to do the streets owned by UDOT but, I had plenty to do for the city. Another problem that I faced with my project was the weather. I couldn't do any work in the rain or the snow. When it rained it would make the paint to wet and runny and it would wash away with the rain. When it was snowy it was to cold to go out and work also, the snow would cover up the sidewalk and make it difficult to work with.
Getting people to help me was another problem that I faced with this project. At first I was able to get plenty of people to help me but over time it was more difficult to get some help. People have busy schedules like everyone else. This is also true for college students, we have a lot to do homework and other activities that happen on campus. There were some days were I had to go out there by myself and just do some work because people had bailed on me or that I couldn't find anyone to help me. The last problem that I faced was my own schedule. I had to plan around my school schedule to do all of this work and in the end it took me a year to complete this project.

In the end all of this hard work payed off for me. I really hope that this project was able to benefit some of the people in this community by helping them avoid some unnecessary parking tickets. Also, this will help clear up the streets a bit in certain areas where people shouldn't even be parking in the first place. For example on the street that is next to the Southern Utah Museum of Art, from 300 N to 200 N, I did a work order for the college to do some work on W Center St because people were parking there during the Shakespeare plays and making the road to small. It wasn't marked with red paint there so people just parked there. Hopefully with the work that I did there the traffic won't be so bad there any more.

This taught me that organizing a bunch of people is harder then it looks.
